Guess when the cheapest month to move is

February 9, 2016

january

The summer for moving companies is comparable to the holidays for retailers. It is nonstop from May to August. Children are out of school which provides the perfect time for families to transition them to their new home. College students are moving on or off campus and high school students are moving into their first college dorm or apartment. Newlyweds are combining households and the housing market is in full swing.  In general, it’s busy!

Because of the huge increase in demand, most movers will raise their rates in the summer. Some moving companies will book up 4-6 weeks in advance so make your reservation way ahead of time. Especially if you’re wanting to move on the weekend or at the end of the month (that’s when a lot of apartment leases are up).

Typically, the slowest month for most movers is January which is when you’ll usually find the lowest rates of the year.  It’s also easier to book moves on short notice since there will be more flexibility on their schedule, possibly even the same day.  A good tip is to make your reservation in January even if you’re not planning to move for several weeks. The closer it gets to summer, the higher the rate you’ll be quoted.  However, make sure to request in writing that you’ll be able to keep the same rate should you need to make any changes and that you won’t be charged a rescheduling fee.
